The extraordinary debut album from Joy Division, released in June 1979 on Manchester’s Factory Records. Produced by Martin Hannett, Unknown Pleasures created a sound that was stark, atmospheric and unlike almost anything else emerging from the British post-punk scene.

From the opening tension of Disorder through to the haunting New Dawn Fades, She’s Lost Control and Shadowplay, the album combines Peter Hook’s distinctive bass, Bernard Sumner’s guitar, Stephen Morris’s precise and innovative drumming and Ian Curtis’s unmistakable vocals.

The iconic black-and-white sleeve, designed by Peter Saville, has become one of the most recognisable images in popular music, while the album itself has gone on to become one of the defining records of the post-punk era.
