The Clean – Great Sounds Great, Good Sounds Good, So-So Sounds So-So, Bad Sounds Bad, Rotten Sounds Rotten!!

Released: 1982 | Flying Nun / Good One Records | Original New Zealand Pressing | 12-inch EP

Great Sounds Great, Good Sounds Good, So-So Sounds So-So, Bad Sounds Bad, Rotten Sounds Rotten!! is one of the key early releases from The Clean and an important document of the emerging New Zealand alternative music scene. Released in 1982, it followed the success of Boodle Boodle Boodle and helped establish the distinctive combination of melodic guitar, loose rhythms, simple arrangements and experimental touches that would become central to the Flying Nun sound.

Recorded in Christchurch in March 1982 by Doug Hood and Chris Knox, the record captures The Clean at their raw, inventive best. The seven tracks move between infectious guitar pop, quirky psychedelic touches and stripped-back experimentation, with Fish, Flowers, Side On and Slug Song particularly representative of the band’s early style.

The record is also an important piece of early Flying Nun Records history, coming from the period when the label was establishing itself as a distinctive force in New Zealand independent music. The original release was a 12-inch 45 rpm EP rather than a conventional LP.
